Hi, I'm Devin, a Personal Trainer in Acton
My name is Devin McNamara and I’m a Certified Personal Trainer. My mission is to teach you the foundations of strength training and nutrition so you can get stronger, eat cleaner, and achieve your health and fitness goals. That is why I opened up my own personal training studio in Acton, MA.
There is no better feeling than a sense of mastery and control over your own health. You’ll be stronger. You’ll have more energy. You’ll decrease your risk of disease. You’ll look better. You’ll have more confidence. In other words you’ll feel better physically, mentally, and emotionally.
I know this because proper fitness and nutrition changed my life. That said, it wasn’t always sunshine and rainbows. For the first few years after I begin lifting weights, I worked out six days per week, didn’t see much progress, and felt discouraged. That’s because I didn’t have a solid plan and backed by sound research. Today, following a science-based approach to both my workouts and my nutrition, I work out 3 to 4 days each week, eat a plant-based diet, and see far better progress than I did in the past. In other words, I discovered a way to work smarter, not harder.
It is my goal to teach you the foundation of strength training, regardless of whether you are 70 years old and have never touched a weight, or 20 years old and are looking to get in the best shape of your life. If you are in or near Acton, MA, then message me and we can set up a complimentary consultation/assessment at my personal training studio.
My Experience
In addition to being certified as a personal trainer, I pride myself on the experiences I have had in the fitness industry. Two summer’s ago, I spent my time coaching at Cressey Sports Performance, one of the top strength and conditioning facilities in the world. The owner, Eric Cressey, oversees the training and strength and conditioning departments for the New York Yankees, so to say I was surrounded and learned from the best in the business isn’t an overstatement. At Cressey Sports Performance, I administered training sessions for 100+ athletes and general population clients each day. The summer prior to this experience, I spent my time coaching at Athletic Evolution, where I not only received intensive strength and conditioning exercise training, but I coached many different athletes each day. More recently, I learned from some of the best Personal Trainers in California at Show Up Fitness, studying extensive anatomy, in addition to the Biology, Anatomy, and Physiology I learned in college.
My Fitness Philosophy
When it comes to exercise, I am a firm believer that everyone should lift weights to some extent, whether you are 20 years old or 75. The benefits are too good to miss out on. Did you know that after the age of 40, bone mass typically depletes at a rate of about 1% each year? Or that as you get older, muscle mass decreases by .5 pounds each year? Well these numbers may seem insignificant, it’s not hard to see how over the course of 10, 20, 30+ years, they certainly add up. Lifting weights not only helps prevent these challenges, but it also can amazingly reverse them, meaning your bones can grow thicker and your muscle can grow bigger even as you age. And better yet, this only scratches the surface of the benefits of lifting weights.
My Nutrition Philosophy
It is hard to find a topic more divided than nutrition. What diet should we follow? Popular diets, such as Keto, Vegan, Mediterranean, Paleo, low carb, high fat all seem to contradict each other. While I don’t like to put a label on myself, I eat a predominantly plant-based diet, consisting of as many whole foods as possible. When you look at the breath of nutrition research, there is overwhelming evidence that the more plant foods (fruits, vegetables, legumes, grains, nuts, seeds) you can include in your diet, the healthier you’ll be. Have you heard of the blue zones? They are regions in the world where entire populations live uniquely long, healthy lives. While there are multiple factors that contribute towards their exceptional health, one behavior they all share in common is that they eat a predominantly whole foods plant-based diet. Now I don’t believe this way of eating needs to be an all or none phenomenon. Any increase in your consumption of whole plant-based foods can improve your health.
